Maps
Hello families,
During our Inquiry on our community we began looking at maps and landmarks. We learned that maps show different places and help us to get around a new place. We also learned that maps have things like titles, keys, and compasses to help people understand and read the map.
This week we made maps of our community that included our houses, parks, and different landmarks around the neighborhood.
We also went on a scavenger hunt around the school with our Grade 3 buddies to learn more about our school community!

The countdown is on
Hello families,
The countdown to our winter concert is on with only 3 more sleeps left until the big night (Thursday December 12th). Just a reminder that there is a daytime performance at 1:00pm and an evening performance at 6:30pm. Students are asked to be in their classrooms by 6:00pm to ensure everyone is ready (and you all get good seats).
We have been learning about 2D shapes and working on naming and creating them. Today we started brainstorming ideas for pictures we could make using many different 2D shapes.
We have also been doing some independent writing about our favourite animals!

There is also a Dress Rehearsal at 1:00pm in the afternoon. Parents are welcome to attend the afternoon performance if they are unable to attend in the evening.
We hope to see you all there!

Patterns and More!
Hello everyone!
We have been busy Grade Ones all week learning lots of new things! In Inquiry we have been talking about the uniforms community helpers wear and learning about what a landmark is. We are working on determining what places in our own community are landmarks too.
In Math we are starting to learn all about sorting and patterns. We have learned how to copy and extend a friend's pattern and are now working on creating many different patterns using 2 or 3 elements. Did you know you can even make patterns with sounds like clapping?
We are also working on being super readers who use all of our reading strategies. We have been learning lots of Chunky Monkey sounds like th, ch, sh, ee, oo, and wh. This week we learned all about the bossy r and then looked for words that have the bossy r sound in our books.
Just a reminder that our Winter Concert is coming up on Thursday December 12 (only 2 weeks away!). All the Grade Ones have been working so hard learning their songs and speaking parts. We are so excited for you to come and see it!

Pumpkins, Number Lines, and More
Hello everyone!
We continued learning about pumpkins this week using their seeds to practice estimation, we learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin, and we used white pencil crayon and oil pastels to create some new art for the classroom.
Have a great week!
We have been busy Grade 1’s this past week learning lots of new things. In Math we started learning about 1 and 2 more, using blocks and number lines to help us solve problems. During one activity we worked in partners to come up with our own problems and help each other solve them using number lines.
We have also been super readers learning to use different strategies like Chunky Monkey, Fish Lips, and Word Detective when reading our books. Word detectives look for the words they already know in a book so we began making lists of all the words we knew in our books.
